It's all about Math! We are working hard on learning Kdg math standards. You know we do a ton in a day but my best pics were from math. As you noticed, I took a week off from blogging. I put extra time in evaluating on-going assessments, student work samples, and small group notes for grade cards. I've also been working with Ms. Beard, our new student teacher. Since I want to continue posting a quality blog I'd rather put it to the side than rush or put forth partial effort. With that being said- here's a snapshot of 2 weeks worth of learning! I recorded the number partners students created. They can show number partners using circle drawings, simple sentences such as 1 and 4, or writing a number sentence 1+4. I see I recorded the wrong number partner here: 1+5 would be a number sentence for 6! Oh well, we all make mistakes and life goes on:) so the picture stays! Mental note to double check my work also.

I have lots of pics this week! We had our Christmas Musical, practiced a lock down drill and celebrated another birthday. All this while still trying to get some teaching done during the crazy, exciting the week of Christmas Break!! Phew, we made it. Students use this chart for phonics, phonemic awareness goal setting. Basically they all have a running person. Their person wants to get to green. They understand that green means "I got it" yellow means "I need some help" and red means " I don't understand" Kids can move up or down but the goal is to move toward and stay on green to be readers for 1st grade. This week we did some Top Secret work! We spend a lot of time creating the perfect holiday gifts for parents. We also had Junior Achievement volunteers come to Robinson and teach lessons to our students Thursday morning! Students have been learning how to solve situational story problems (addition and subtraction). I am moving them to creating their own story problem. It's a long process but we will get there! This week's blog focuses on Math and Math/Science integration. We have had several new students join our class over the past 5 weeks. We are now up to 16! As a result, it's been necessary to spend time reviewing class/hallway procedures to make sure all the new students know my expectations. Please make sure to keep reading the decodable books every night and return the homework folder daily. I don't send much homework but it is meaningful. Students discovered a problem with our data. We recorded 2 snowy days on our weather chart but had no place to record this data on their weather graph. After discussing several possible solutions, students agreed to write in snowy days under rainy. Each of our 3 weather icons have 2 ten frames (20 spaces). Since rainy only used 2 days the students agreed that snowy days could share the 2nd ten frame. Way to go little Scientists!
We made it through our short but oh-so-long 3 day week! We had a lot of fun:) check out some of the exciting extracurricular activities we did. To my Robinson Family: I am thankful for all the support and kindness I receive from each and every parent. I am thankful for the sweet faces that happily greet me every morning and make it a joy to come to work! I am thankful for the beautiful space I was given in which to provide a wonderful learning experience for your children. I am blessed. I hope everyone had a fabulous and safe Thanksgiving! This week we learned about the history behind our Thanksgiving Holiday and also about Pilgrims and Native Americans. We spent the bulk of our time focused on the differences between then and now. Students discussed ways Pilgrims were thankful and then shared what they are thankful for. I've also highlighted some of the fun learning we are doing in Math. We use math tools and the Smartboard for most of our lessons. It keeps the kids engaged and busy. Our turkey disguises turned out so cute! The students decided they needed a little bit more disguise to truly keep their turkey safe from the dinner table. I poked around in my cabinets and found all sorts of goodies to add to students' turkeys. We learned the big fancy word 'cornicopia' after learning about the first Thanksgiving feast. Students made their own Horn of Plenty following the lesson. I had to add this little Ninja Turtle to the blog. Just an example of student creativity! Here are two more examples of our daily weather journals. Students work at their own ability level. My job is to push for a little more every day. I'll continue to add pics of both the daily weather journal and our morning journal so parents can see the progression of writing skills. Day 1- students identified #1-10, placed them in numerical order, and showed 6 as 5 and 1 more. A few students worked with a partner for this activity as it was challenging for some. Day 2- students are doing Quick Practice. This is a 5 min activity focused on specific skills. This day students show fingers for numbers 6-10. I added recording on the smartboard. Students are getting familiar with oral number sentences, number sentences with words, and also number sentences with symbols (+) (-) (=). For these next few pictures, we were working on showing equal and not equal. That's some of our week in learning. We will have a 3 day week for Nov. 24-26th! The past week and a half have been serious "crunch time" for all of us teachers trying to get our assessments, student work samples, and data forms prepared before parent teacher conferences. Though we have a small class, it still takes a lot of time to skills check each student individually. Thankfully, I am all done-for now! Conferences were a success! I had nearly every parent attend. I hope everyone left with great information and a clear understanding of where their child is socially and academically. This week we will return back to our normal busy schedule. I have some new fun activities in store for the kids. Now, my next plan is to make sure I keep my camera handy to get all the good shots for you!
This week you'll find a little bit of everything. We attended a Fire Safety House program that was very informative! We paired up with Mrs. Omey's Kindergarten so I only have 2 photos that I could include in this blog. However, I'll be happy to show you many extra photos of our farm trip and this program during parent teacher conferences Nov. 13th and 14th. Last week I had forgotten to take pics of the finished art project that our class completed as part of Story Time with Imagination Station. I made sure to include photos this week of that artwork. Our little scientists have been learning about clouds. They are very good at weather observation and now have added cloud identification to their daily weather journals. I also have photos of our Halloween Parade and Party. It was fun! I hope all the students had a safe and fun Halloween! Remember to leave that candy at home...otherwise Mrs. Hamilton takes it (and eats it!!)
This was the week of The Great Animal Farm Field Trip! I've had many parent requests for lots of pictures. I took over 100!! It was so fun. I had to narrow down my photo choices. I tried to select something for everyone. I hope you all enjoyed our class story retelling our trip. I hope everyone enjoyed our adventures this week. Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of our learning!
For this blog, I wanted to give you a bigger picture of what we do in a week. It's not everything-mainly because I don't always hold my camera and remember to take pictures:) but it's a good representation of our learning. Enjoy! |
